SELECTION PROCESS
Co-Chairs from each site: Principal from the site and a Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association Delegate
Site Nominations – Each school will nominate teachers who best exemplify excellence in the teaching profession from their school. Co-Chairs will determine the election place, date, and time and are responsible for counting the secret ballots cast for the nominees for Teacher of the Year (a teacher who has taught at least 3 years in the district).
The TOY Nomination Report form (NEW, see attached to this application) will be completed by the Co-chairs and are DUE from each school on or before January 15, 2010. Please send to Linda Earnest, Human Capital.
COUNSELORS, DEANS AND LIBRARIANS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR NOMINATION.
Area Selection Committees- Each Area Superintendent will form committees to select semi-finalists. A total of thirteen semi-finalists will be selected as follows:
• Six Elementary School Semi-Finalists
• Four Middle School Semi-Finalists
• Two High School Semi-Finalists
• One Alternative Site Semi-Finalist
The area committees should be composed of at least one teacher, one administrator, as well as the Area Superintendent. From the 13 Semi-Finalists, 5 Finalists will be selected and submitted to HC by the end of the day on February 19, 2010.
District Committee- The committee will conduct classroom observations for the 5 Finalists on Wednesday, February 19-26th, 2010. The District Committee will be chaired by Paula Wood.
The District Committee will be composed of the following individuals:
1. Chair – Paula Wood, Community Liaison
2. Current State Teacher of the Year and Tulsa Teacher of the Year – Brian Grimm
3. H. J. Green, Deputy Superintendent
4. TCTA President – Denzel Kesterson
5. Lynelle Burrows –Lead Director of Human Capital
Community Advisory Committee – The committee will be composed of members of the community who have a tie to education. They will evaluate and select Tulsa’s Teacher of the Year. The committee will view a taped session of each candidate teaching, will complete a rubric from each application, and will conduct an interview with each candidate.
The Community Advisory Committee will be comprised of individuals such as:
• University professors
• Media Representatives
• Legislators
• Community Leaders/Volunteers/Parents
The Community Advisory Committee will submit the name of the Tulsa Teacher of the Year to Human Capital by March 11, 2010. The announcement of the Teacher of the Year will be made at the All Employee Banquet, April 23, 2010.

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS
To participate in the Tulsa Teacher of the Year Program, a portfolio must be submitted on or before January 15, 2010. The portfolio should contain the following:
1. TOY Nomination Report form signed by the Co-Chairs, Principal and a Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association Delegate from the site.
2. Basic Data Sheet-form enclosed.
3. Professional Biography-what were the factors that influenced you to become a teacher? Describe what you consider to be your greatest contributions and accomplishments in education. (Limit response to two (2) double-spaced pages.)
4. Professional statement on your philosophy of teaching-describe your personal feelings and beliefs about teaching, including your own ideas of what makes you an outstanding teacher. Describe the rewards you find in teaching. How are your beliefs about teaching demonstrated in your personal teaching style? (Limit response to two (2) double-spaced pages.)
5. Professional Development-participation in professional organizations, service on committees, commissions, task forces, workshops and conferences attended. (Limit response to two (2) double-spaced pages.)
6. The Teaching Profession-What do you do to strengthen the teaching profession? What is and/or what should be the basis for accountability in the teaching profession? (Limit response to two (2) double-spaced pages.)
ADVISORY: Each nominee is advised to make copies of their portfolio, as the material will not be returned to you!

NOTE: A teacher may nominate another teacher or be nominated by a group or may self-nominate. Only teachers who have more than three (3) years experience are eligible to be nominated.
